Mustang was once one of seven kingdoms that made up ancient Nepal. The region still has a King. In ancient times he derived his authority from Tibet, where his title was 'Lo Gyalpo', meaning "King of the South". The former King of Nepal had given him an honorary title that confirmed his position.position. The people of this region are devout Buddhists who follow the Sakyamuni sect. They are ethnically Tibetan in origin and culture, but still Nepalese.
Mustang is geologically a semi-desert, a sunken area in an otherwise unbroken wall of mountains. This made the area an important trade route into Tibet, and the route along the Kali Gandaki was highly guarded, as several now-abandoned forts suggest. The area lies within the Annapurna-Dhaulagiri rain shadow and it is very dry. Primitive farming is carried out entirely through snowmelt irrigation. Considering the region's uniqueness and beauty, and in order to preserve the heritage of this mythical kingdom, the Mustang area has been declared a “restricted area” and one needs to get special permission to trek in the area.
The trek begins at Jomsom but could be connected to many other routes. It links to the Annapurna Circuit Trail. A typical itinerary is ten days, but this period is never enough for a complete exploration of this mystical place. We have designed this trek so that the trekkers can explore more of the Mustang area.
