The Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek follows the route of legendary mountaineers like Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay Sherpa to the base camp of the world's highest mountain. This is the classic mountain trail that was used by these first mountaineers on the first successful ascent of Mt. Everest in 1953. The mountain trail from Jiri to Everest was used by Sir Edmund Hilary and every mountaineering expedition and trek into the region until the small airport in Lukla was built in the 1960s. The short flight now offers a significant short cut.
Nowadays, although due to time restriction, many trekkers opt to take a flight to Lukla and start the trek from there. The Everest base camp trek starting in Jiri is equally popular and regularly used by trekkers as it has its own gratifications. The hilly mountain country, beautiful villages, rivers and streams, less crowded trails and most importantly the opportunity for gradual acclimatization are a few of the route's offerings that attract trekkers to this itinerary. This route also provides an opportunity to visit more Buddhist monasteries and more of the gorgeous ethnic villages that represent simple, yet rich, mountain lifestyles.
Trekkers on this trail will gain an intense and enduring experience. Jiri to Everest base camp is a great adventure for travelers who are physically fit, in good health and are determined to challenge themselves with the unpredictability and rigors of mountain life.
